Reading group – Our language is inadequate for a discussion of stars*

For the duration of the exhibition Once an Alien, Semâ Bekirović, Ruth Legg and Marcus Bruystens have organized a reading group which aims to consider the relationship between science and narrative, as one of the main themes explored in Bekirović’s film. Over the course of 4 sessions the group will read a selection of poems, short stories and novel extracts which reflect the human desire to describe, quantify, observe and ultimately understand the world around us. Central to the selected texts is a question of the limits of language and, in turn, the limits of knowledge. Works by Rae Armantrout, Pamela Zoline, Primo Levi, Italo Calvino, Borges, Elizabeth Bishop, and Kurt Vonnegut will be included.

In addition to the reading group, there is a reading table in which books connected to themes of the film will be available to read. This can be accessed during the opening hours of the exhibition. The reading table was designed at the request of ROZENSTRAAT by artist and designer Arthur Jules.

Composer/musician Marcus Bruystens made the music for Once an Alien and plays in a bunch of bands. He records music under the name Eilander. When he is not making music he is usually reading poetry.

Ruth Legg is a visual artist working with video. Since 2014 she has organized Moving Image Club, a series of events in which artists are invited to present and discuss moving image clips which relate to their own practice.

The reading group will take place at ROZENSTRAAT on the following Wednesday evenings; June 7th, June 21st, July 5th, July 19th (time to be confirmed). All sessions will be in English.

The reading sessions are open to everybody. You can register for individual or multiple sessions. To do so please contact info@rozenstraat.com

Texts will be made available to participants several weeks before the session.
