Are you someone who finds freedom in public nudity, joy in collective action, and power in raising your voice?
We are assembling a nude vocal performance in a public space in Amsterdam — a bold, beautiful, and liberating manifestation of body and voice.
We’re looking for volunteers who:
Are comfortable (and enthusiastic!) being naked in public
Love singing, or performing (no professional experience required)
Are passionate about reclaiming public space for expression and freedom
The performance takes place on September 13th 2025

About the performance:
Naked Recreation is a new, boundary-pushing choral performance by Publik Universal Frxnd, developed for five naked performers and fifty naked volunteers, staged in the public space of Amsterdam. Commissioned by ROZENSTRAAT, the project explores two fundamental aspects of being human: our body and our voice.
In this performance, vulnerability and expression meet within the public, urban domain. Nudity becomes not merely a symbol, but a powerful gesture — a declaration of visibility, freedom and the right to simply be.
The naked body in public space carries a long and layered history, challenging how we move through space, how we share it and where the line between public and private begins to dissolve. To take up public space with naked bodies is a radical act: it reveals vulnerability, claims space, and dares to imagine other ways of being.
Collective singing becomes both a metaphor and an act: a search for harmony and an acknowledgment of dissonance, for collective presence and the manifestation of the individual voice. By literally and figuratively falling in and out of tune, a choreography of community and confrontation emerges. Here, nudity is not just symbolic — it is liberating, confrontational, and deeply human at the same time.
History of Amsterdam
Naked Recreation draws inspiration from several moments in Amsterdam’s past. In the early 1990s, Mattias Duyves founded Stichting GALA to increase the visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community through public events. At the same time, the existence of the Oeverlanden—a well-known gay cruising spot by the Nieuwe Meer—came under threat due to urban expansion. Duyves saw cruising as an essential expression of queer culture and actively fought to protect this space. His resistance serves as a key inspiration for the performance.
Naked Recreation also refers to the Anabaptist uprising of 1535, during which forty naked religious rebels stormed Dam Square, in protest against religious oppression. Though brutally suppressed, their act lives on as a legendary moment in the city’s history—and is said to be the origin of the Dutch expression “the naked truth.”
Although less present, the feminist movement Dolle Mina also serves as a reference. Starting in 1969, they frequently used their (naked) bodies as a means to combine political messaging with playful protest—drawing attention to the fight for women’s emancipation.
With these references in mind the performance explores public space as both a battleground and a site of transformation. In all three cases, the naked body broke through social norms and became a call for change. Naked Recreation raises questions about visibility, freedom, and collective memory—rooted deeply in Amsterdam’s enduring tradition of resistance and reinvention.
In addition to the live performance, Naked Recreation includes a public program and a publication.

Publik Universal Frxnd (formerly known as Richard John Jones) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Amsterdam. Their work explores themes of identity, spirituality, and the dissolution of the self, often challenging conventional norms and embracing contradictions. Through performances, installations, and collaborations, they invite audiences to question and expand their understanding of selfhood and community. They’re work is supported by the Mondriaan Fonds.

Wij organiseren een naakte muziekperformance in de openbare ruimte van Amsterdam — een gedurfde, mooie en bevrijdende viering van lichaam en stem.
We zoeken vrijwilligers die:
- – Zich comfortabel voelen (en enthousiast zijn! ) om naakt in het openbaar te verschijnen
– Houden van zingen of performen (professionele ervaring is niet nodig)
– Zich willen inzetten om de publieke ruimte te heroveren als een vrijplaats voor expressie en vrijheid

Naked Recreation
Een eerbetoon aan Amsterdam in stem en lichaam
Naked Recreation is een nieuwe, grensverleggende muziekvoorstelling van Publik Universal Frxnd, ontwikkeld voor vijf naakte performers en vijftig naakte vrijwilligers, uitgevoerd in de openbare ruimte van Amsterdam. In opdracht van kunstruimte ROZENSTRAAT – a rose is a rose is a rose – verkent het project twee kernaspecten van het mens-zijn: ons lichaam en onze stem.
Door samen te zingen, verkent de performance momenten van harmonie en dissonantie. Het innemen van ruimte met naakte lichamen is een radicale daad: een die kwetsbaarheid blootlegt, zichtbaarheid opeist en het recht om anders te bestaan bevestigt. Naaktheid is hier niet slechts symbolisch; het is bevrijdend, confronterend en diep menselijk.
Naast de live performance omvat Naked Recreation een publieksprogramma en een publicatie.
Geschiedenis van Amsterdam
Naked Recreation is gebaseerd op drie historische momenten uit de Amsterdamse geschiedenis.
Begin jaren ’90 richtte Mattias Duyves Stichting GALA op om de zichtbaarheid van de LHBTQIA+ gemeenschap te vergroten via evenementen in de openbare ruimte. Tegelijkertijd kwam het voortbestaan van de Oeverlanden, een bekende homo-ontmoetingsplek aan de Nieuwe Meer, onder druk te staan door stadsuitbreiding. Duyves zag cruising als een wezenlijk onderdeel van queer cultuur en zette zich actief in om deze ruimte te behouden. Zijn strijd vormt een belangrijke inspiratiebron voor deze performance.
Verder verwijst Naked Recreation naar het Wederdopersoproer van 1535, waarbij veertig religieuze opstandelingen naakt de Dam bestormden uit protest tegen onderdrukking. Hun actie, hard neergeslagen maar historisch gedenkwaardig, wordt gezien als oorsprong van de uitdrukking “de naakte waarheid”.
Ook de feministische beweging Dolle Mina inspireert: zij gebruikten vanaf 1969 het naakte lichaam als middel om politieke boodschap en ludiek protest te combineren en zo aandacht te vragen voor vrouwenrechten.
Door deze momenten met elkaar te verbinden, onderzoekt de performance de openbare ruimte als strijdtoneel én plek van transformatie. In alle drie de gevallen doorbrak het naakte lichaam sociale normen en riep het op tot verandering. Naked Recreation stelt vragen over zichtbaarheid, vrijheid en collectieve herinnering – diep geworteld in de Amsterdamse traditie van verzet en vernieuwing.

Publik Universal Frxnd (voorheen bekend als Richard John Jones) is een multidisciplinair kunstenaar gevestigd in Amsterdam. Hun werk onderzoekt thema’s als identiteit, spiritualiteit en het loslaten van het zelf, en daagt daarbij vaak conventionele normen uit door tegenstrijdigheden te omarmen. Door middel van performances, installaties en samenwerkingen nodigen zij het publiek uit om hun begrip van het zelf en gemeenschap te heroverwegen en te verruimen. Hun werk wordt ondersteund door het Mondriaan Fonds.
