MOKUMENT, a tribute to 750 years of Amsterdam
This exhibition celebrates Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary with a visual tribute to the colorful procession that keeps the city going day in, day out. It’s not the bricks that make Amsterdam’s soul, but the people: the market vendor shouting his lungs out over the fish stalls, the firefighter wielding the hose, the drag queen who’s painting the night into day. From the old canals to the glass skyline of the Zuidas, the city’s heart beats in its residents and their daily dedication.
Historical group portraits—with Rembrandt’s Night Watch as the most famous example— are the inspiration for this project. Yet this series aims to present something morecontemporary: an Image that is more inclusive and diverse than 17th-century painting ever allowed. In this way, MOKUMENT is a representation of the groups that keep Amsterdam running today. What used to be captured in paint is now photographed. Not only are the identities of communities are evolving, but so are the means by which they are immortalized.
MOKUMENT is a project by photographer Leo Veger.
