Jeanne Oosting Prize – Peter Koole and Christiaan Bastiaans

Once again this summer, ROZENSTRAAT collaborates with the Jeanne Oosting Prize, which this year will be awarded to visual artists Peter Koole and Christiaan Bastiaans. The jury, consisting of fellow artists Hadassah Emmerich, Rezi van Lankveld and Jan van de Pavert, chose Koole and Bastiaans for their individuality, expressiveness and consistent quality within their oeuvre. The jury is impressed by the position the work has taken nationally and internationally. The prize is a stimulus for artists who involve figuration in their work. Peter Koole and Christiaan Bastiaans will each receive a cash prize of € 7,500 and a bronze medal.

The official award ceremony and presentation of the jury report will take place on Sunday, August 28 at 3 pm during the finissage of the exhibition.

Peter Koole (1958) will receive the Jeanne Oosting Prize for Painting. The jury chose Peter Koole based on his longstanding commitment to his subjects, such as the (aftermath of the) Balkan War, the fall of Srebrenica and the murder of the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya. His refined, dedicated and urgent paintings are currently more topical than ever. (read more)

Peter Koole has had exhibitions at venues including the Laurenskerk Rotterdam, Stroom Den Haag, Internationaal Perscentrum Nieuwspoort, TENT Rotterdam, SM Schiedam, Museum Jan Cunen, Kunstenlab, Poetry International Festival Rotterdam, Galerie SANAA, twelve twelve gallery and currently at BRUTUS (Rotterdam). His paintings are included in the collections of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Museum Jan Cunen, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Centraal Museum, Rijksdienst Beeldende Kunst and Pauluskerk Rotterdam.

Christiaan Bastiaans (1951) is receiving the Jeanne Oosting Prize for his work on paper. The jury chose Bastiaans because of his longstanding and interesting substantive trajectory, in which current themes such as migration, displacement and la condition humaine are portrayed from various angles and in a variety of ways. Bastiaans’ work focuses on the human being whose life is marked by a struggle for survival. “Man shuns his only certainty of being fragile as glass.” (read more)

Christiaan Bastiaans was educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (1971-1976) and at Kyoto City University of Arts (1976-1978). Bastiaans’ work has been shown at De Pont (Tilburg), the Kröller-Müller Museum (Otterlo), New Museum (New York) and de Appel arts centre (Amsterdam), among others. He also participated in the 12th Biennale de Paris at Musée D’Art de la Ville de Paris (1982) and in the Aperto La Biennale Di Venezia in Venice (1988) and in 2019 in the Setouchi Art Triennale in Japan. His work is included in several museum collections including the Kröller-Müller Museum and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

De Jeanne Oosting Prijzen, a true artist’s prize

The Jeanne Oosting Prijzen were established in 1970 by visual artist Jeanne Bieruma Oosting (1898 – 1994) based on her involvement in the visual arts world. With her death in 1994, the Jeanne Oosting Foundation was established by testamentary disposition to continue the awarding of prizes.

The Jeanne Oosting Prizes are awarded in appreciation of individual artistic quality within figurative art. A unique aspect of the prize is that the jury is composed entirely of fellow artists.

It is now the 52nd time that both prizes are awarded. Among the prize winners of the last 20 years are Sylvie Zijlmans, Hans de Wit, Fons Haagmans, Philip Akkerman, Ronald Ophuis, Ronald Zuurmond, Gé-Karel van der Sterren, Emo Verkerk, Ina van Zyl, Ad Gerritsen, David Haines, Jan Beutener, Derk Thijs, Jan van de Pavert, Jo Baer, Kinke Kooi, Charlotte Schleiffert, Arjan van Helmond, Henk Visch, Bettie van Haaster, Hannah van Bart, Jacco Olivier, Maria Roosen, Janine van Oene, Nour-Eddine Jarram and Lily van der Stokker.
