ROZENSTRAAT – A rose is a rose is a rose

An evening around the work of poet and choreographer Hezy Leskly (1952-1994) with contributions by Maya Gordon.

 

For the public program around the presentation with works by Claudio Goulart and Flavio Pons will we will focus on the work of Hezy Leskly, of one of their closest friends. In 1974 after refusing to serve in the Israeli army Leskly moved to The Netherlands to study at the Vrije Academie in The Hague. After  moving to Amsterdam he became part of the local art scene of the Dutch capital. He was a contributor to the Magazine Artzien and he took part at performance nights and shows at de Appel and galerie Bedaux among others.

 

Although being active as an artist and choreographer, Leskly was foremost a poet, and after returning to Israel be became an art critic as well. He started writing poetry when he was 14 and his first poems where published at the age of 18. Dance and homosexuality continued being prominent themes in his writings. His last book of poems was published few months after his death in 1994.

 

The event will start with a screening of the documentary (Yakantalisa, 1996) about Leskly’s live, followed by performative contribution by Maya Gordon one of his closets friends that he met while living in Amsterdam and who’s drawings accompanied most of his books. The event will be concluded by a reading of a selection of Leskly’s poems.
